CBMA

My present research interests lie in the boundary between ecology and ecotoxicology, mainly focusing on the effect of (multiple) environmental stressors in animal populations (mostly freshwater invertebrates), using a combination of lab and field approaches. Working collaboratively has allowed me to explore the effects of biotic and abiotic stress at various organization levels. An ecological framework is always present in my work, viewing species as interacting nodes in trophic webs and as players of ecological processes. I am keen on scientific subjects focused on how populations and communities cope with environmental and man-induced change, motivated by the need of solid scientific underpinnings for tackling the present challenges of freshwater science.

Currently, I am especially interested in understanding how fungicides (mostly agrochemicals) affect aquatic food webs and associated processes, by using experimental approaches with multi-species systems. My focus on fungicides stems from their widespread use, persistence in the environment, but also because the ecological effects of these substances on microbial communities and processes have been overlooked. Parallel studies with a host-parasite system (water flea-parasitic yeast) and a detrital food chain (aquatic invertebrate-hyphomycetes) are ongoing as proxies of a disease model and decomposition model, respectively.
