Ana Preto is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biology and senior researcher at CBMA in the University of Minho, and Consultant Researcher at IPATIMUP/i3S. She graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Faculty of Pharmacy in 1998 and completed her PhD in Human Biology by the Faculty of Medicine in 2004, both at the University of Porto. Ana Preto was a PhD student of the PhD Program GABBA and performed the PhD in IPATIMUP in collaboration with the Department of Pathology, University of Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff, Wales, UK (2000/2004). From 2004 to 2007 had a Post-Doc position at IPATIMUP.

Ana Preto has been focusing in understanding the role of KRAS mutations signalling pathways in autophagy regulation in colorectal cancer (CRC) survival, towards identification of new molecular targets to metastatic CRC. Ana Preto has also been interested in unravelling in CRC, the mechanism of action of short chain fatty acids namely acetate produced by propionibacteria from diet. Ana Preto goal is the identification of new molecular targets for CRC, which could inspire other groups, with whom she collaborates, to the development of new drugs or nanoparticles for specific target of CRC cells.

Ana Preto is Reviewer at 15 peer-reviewed journals and was an Invited evaluator for research PhD grants at the "Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR)”, Luxembourg and invited evaluator  for research projects contest from the “Gabinete de Apoio à Investigação (GAI)”,  from the faculty of Medicine from the University of Coimbra. She is Topic Associated Editor at Frontiers in Nutrition. She has been involved in the organising committee of both National and International meetings. Granted 4 prizes and 3 grants; supervised 37 post-graduate students including 24 Master students (4 ongoing) and 6 PhD students (2 ongoing). Participated as team researcher in several research projects: 12 National, 2 European (1 FP7 and 1 Marie Curie) and 1 USA (financed by KoDiscoveryâ company). Co-authored 2 Patents.

Ana Preto has 63 Scientific Publications (49 Papers in scientific journals with peer review indexed in ISI; 14 Abstracts published in proceedings of scientific meetings), 1 book chapter, with more than 1980 citations (Scopus) and 83 Scientific Communications (24 Oral communications and 59 Posters). She is the first author in 7 manuscripts and senior author in 5, with an h-index (Scopus) of 20. Her results were published in top cancer-related journals, including Oncogene, BMC Cancer, Journal of Pathology, Cell Death and Disease, Oncotarget. Ana Preto also participates in several projects not directly related with her own research, with data published in Q1 journals, such as Nature Communications, Br J Cancer, Biochemistry Journal, Cancer Letters, Nanomedicine, Biomacromolecules, Faraday Discussions, Journal of Biomedical Nanotechnology, Modern Pathology reflecting her multidisciplinary scientific expertise.
