The focal theme of the congress is Current threats to freshwater ecosystems: challenges and opportunities. Freshwaters provide vital services for humanity but increasing pressures, from a multitude of sources (e.g. climate change, invasive species, pollution, loss and fragmentation of habitat, overexploitation), threaten the future availability of those services, including basic commodities as the availability of drinking water. The XVIth AIL Congress will provide an opportunity to address those outstanding questions, and discuss the most up to date fundamental and applied knowledge on freshwater biology, ecology and environmental management.

ECOplast Workshop
8 June 2011 Braga, Portugal

The ECOplast workshop, organized under the scope of the ECOplast - European Research Project aims at presenting and discuss cutting edge progresses in tailor-made bio-composites – from design an   production to present and prospective applications.
Conscious of the increasing ecological awareness along with new legislation that boosted the demand for products with a high ecological image both science and industry partners are aiming to develop biopolymers based on renewable resources that fulfill the required specifications of the highly demanding automotive industry.
The ECOplast workshop will address the recent developments of new biomass-based composites, biopolymer production, novel reinforcements, nanofillers and additives, and the adaptation of conventional processing techniques for the next generation of bioplastics.

(2nd Conference of the European Consortium for the Barcode of Life)
2 - 4 June 2010 Braga, Portugal

The European Consortium for the Barcode of Life (ECBOL) and the Centre for Molecular and Environmental Biology (CBMA), University of Minho (Portugal), organized in Braga the 2nd ECBOL conference, under the focal theme of the 2010 United Nations’ International Year of Biodiversity.
Since the first ECBOL meeting in 2007, much progress had been seen in the Barcode of Life initiative. DNA barcoding is currently considered a “fast rising field” due to the steady increase in the number of scientific publications related to this topic that has been published since 2004.
Within 2 years of the first meeting, ECBOL2 provided the opportunity for strengthening the implementation of DNA barcoding in Europe and to further explore interactions between European partners and institutions with the barcoding community across the world.

(2nd Workshop of the EuroFISHBOL network)
1st June 2010 Braga, Portugal

Organized within the framework of ECBOL2, this workshop allowed the EuroFISHBOL community to gather and discuss the current situation of barcoding in fish communities and to develop joint strategies to pursuit the group's objectives.

This event was organized by: Monica Landi and Filipe Costa
