Our paper Pydna: a simulation and documentation tool for DNA assembly strategies using python [1] was the second most popular on the BMC Bioinformatics website.

ypkWhat is pydna?

Planning large genetic constructs with many parts, such as recombinant metabolic pathways is usually done manually using a DNA sequence editor which quickly becomes unfeasible as scale and complexity increase.

The Pydna python package provide a human-readable formal description of cloning and assembly strategies which also allows for automatic computer simulation and verification.

Pydna provides simulation of:
.     restriction digestion
.     ligation
    PCR
.     primer design
.     Gibson assembly
.     homologous recombination

A cloning strategy expressed in pydna is complete, unambiguous and stable. Pydna has been designed to be understandable for biologists with limited programming skills. Pydna simplifies planning and sharing of cloning strategies and is especially useful for complex or combinatorial DNA molecule construction.

Look at some assembly strategies made in the IPython notebook format here !

Prize Prof. Doutor Luís Archer

Ana Margarida Pereira, a research grantee at CBMA under the supervision of Raul Machado and Margarida Casal, was awarded the Prize Prof. Doutor Luís Archer for the Best Poster Presentation at the XXXIX Portuguese Genetics Conference by SPG (Sociedade Portuguesa de Genética). The work presented, entitle “Silk-based polymers functionalized with fibronectin type-II for improved cell adhesion” by Ana Margarida Pereira, Raul Machado, Telma Bernardo, André da Costa, Artur Ribeiro, Tony Collins, Andreia C. Gomes, Isabel Leonor, David Kaplan, Rui L. Reis and Margarida Casal, reports the development of biopolymers functionalized with a cell adhesion domain through genetics, namely recombinant DNA technology, to be used as biomaterials in tissue engineering and biomedical applications.

The XXXIX Portuguese Genetics Conference was held at Braga, from the 25th to the 27th of May 2015.

Birdwatching

Bring your family and friends to enjoy a morning of birdwatching. Equipped with binoculars and field guides, we will try to detect and identify the fantastic birds that fly through the skies of the beautiful Monastery of S. Martinho de Tibães, and learn more about the avifauna that occurs in mainland Portugal.

arunavaThe PhD thesis of Arunava Pradhan entitled Impacts of nanoparticles to microbes and invertebrates: from community responses to cellular targets developed at the CBMA in the University of Minho, under the supervision of Fernanda Cássio, Cláudia Pascoal and Sahadevan Seena, was among the best PhD theses developed in the Iberian Peninsula over the last 2 years, and was awarded with a special mention by the Iberian Association of Limnology.

Landscape Laboratory Award attributed to the Master in Ecology

The City Hall of Guimarães and the School of Sciences of UMinho attributed the Landscape Laboratory Award to the Master in Ecology. The award was attributed to Francisco Carvalho, who concluded the Master in Ecology last year. The award consists of a one-year fellowship to develop work at the Landscape Laboratory in Guimarães. Ciência p´ra que te quero

ciencia

Experiment@Ciência, in partnership with NEBAUM (Núcleo de Estudantes de Biologia Aplicada da Universidade do Minho) organizes every morning of the 3rd Saturday of each month, at the Library Lúcio Craveiro da Silva, scientific interdisciplinary hands-on activities– Ciência p´ra que te quero - for children from 6 to 10 years.

M. Judite Almeida, a CBMA member, is in the core of the design and implementation of these activities.

The first activity, “Bate Bate Coração”, runs on Saturday morning, February 21.
